Alex: The Life of a Child

September 20, 2017

I've hesitated adding this to my recommended reads list because it's heartbreaking

and scary.  But, since I'm listing it, I urge everyone to use caution when reading this book:

Keep in mind that a lot of the information/treatments regarding CF have changed drastically since this book was written.  In fact, the Forward of the book states exactly this.

I don't want any friends or family to read this book and then run towards Avie, clinging to her bedside at night and crying while she sleeps... because I've already done that and it was creepy.  Avie's case (dare I say most cases these days) is and will be MUCH different than sweet Alex's personal battle and it is crucial that comparisons NOT be made.

This is the kind of book that one wants to finish in private, where the ugly cry can't be seen.  It's also smart to have a few episodes of your favorite tv show on hand to watch immediately afterwards... you know, to take your mind off it.

So, why the heck am I suggesting this book?

Well, because the author wanted it to be read.  He wanted Alex's story to be told and he wanted her to impact the lives of as many people as possible.  It's quite amazing how many people have already been touched by this book.  At the end, the author talks about letters and stories sent to his family from complete strangers, who were moved so much by Alex's story.  Some of these people even taking jobs as researchers specifically trying to stamp out Cystic Fibrosis because they read this book.

It's with that spirit that I am writing this post... and it's actually with that same spirit that I write anything on this site.  Raise awareness and spread the word because you never know who will hear it and be the one to make a difference.
